Native Birds of Florida
With over 137.6 million visitors a year, Florida has become a popular destination for visitors from various cities across the US. From its beaches to beautiful nature preserves, one can find beauty anywhere they look. A favorite pastime of many visitors is Florida’s diverse selection of wildlife, primarily focusing on its bird population.
Visitors come to identify Florida’s birds and see some unique species they don’t often see elsewhere. With this in mind, consider looking at how you can work on identifying the different types of Florida birds that you might spot while visiting the area.
Identifying the Birds of Miami-Dade County
Miami-Dade County offers some of the broadest variety of birds for visitors to see. As the largest county by population in the entire state, it is also a significant birdwatcher hub. You will find many native species and newly introduced birds not originally native to the area.
Introduced Birds
The American Birding Association (ABA) works hard to verify the different species of birds that exist in a given area. They seek to help determine what kind of birds habitate in Miami-Dade County, some of which you may be able to see at Deering Estate. Over the years, they have uncovered many species of introduced and vagrant birds in the area. These include:
- Egyptian Goose
- Muscovy Duck
- Indian Peafowl
- Red Junglefowl
- Rock Pigeon
- Eurasian Collared-Dove
- Gray-headed Swamphen
- Monk Parakeet
- Nanday Parakeet
- Mitred Parakeet
- Red-masked Parakeet
- White-winged Parakeet
- Yellow-chevroned Parakeet
- Red-crowned Parrot
- and many more
These delightful creatures might not have initially lived in the Miami-Dade area, but most in the community have welcomed them with open arms. The people in the area love to see that so many species of birds can survive and thrive in their communities, which is a big reason why Deering Estate is an excellent place to partake in bird watching while enjoying a piece of Miami history.
Vagrant Birds
Other species of birds that fly into the Miami-Dade county have been known to migrate from nearby islands such as the Bahamas. Sometimes, these vagrant birds appear from places as far away as Mexico. They might not have originated in South Florida, but they find a way to make the area their home. Some examples of vagrant birds living in South Florida include:
- White-cheeked Pintail
- Masked Duck
- American Flamingo
- Least Grebe
- Ruddy Quail-Dove
- Key West Quail-Dove
- Zenaida Dove
- Antillean Palm-Swift
- Neotropic Cormorant
- Stygian Owl
These are all beautiful creatures to look at as well. When you do, you will know that you are seeing something truly unique that you could not necessarily experience anywhere else.
