This classes are geared for students ages 9-14. Classes will explore the fields of wildlife biology, marine biology, ecology, and environmental science. Class meets at the Visitor Center

November: Wildlife Discovery
Date: November 4, 2020 Activity: Intro to wildlife observation at Deering.
Description: Students will learn and discuss the variety of habitats that can be found in the Deering Estate’s nature preserve. They will be hiking the main trails protected natural areas and applying their scientific observation skills towards identifying native flora and fauna.
Date: November 11, 2020 Activity: From Macro to Micro.
Description: Students will be collecting soil samples from different ecosystems in order to observe the biodiversity of invertebrates. We are going to compare the species richness and abundance of micro and macro fauna found in habitats of different scales. Students will have the opportunity to learn about and work with lab equipment such as microscopes and a Berlese funnel while analyzing species found at Deering.
Date: November 18, 2020 Activity: The Life of Plants
Description: Students are going to learn different survey techniques to explore the flora diversity of Deering Estate. Students will identity plants based on their different structures and characteristics. They will analyze key interactions of plants in their environment by creating a native pollinator garden.
Students must practice social distancing and wear face coverings. Please review the latest safety guidelines prior to visiting.
