These homeschool classes are geared for students ages 9-14. Classes will focus on Marine Biology through a diverse array of activities. Each session includes 4 Wednesday classes in the same month, and each class is from 10 AM – 1 PM. Schedule of activities are listed below or can be found here.

Ages: 9-14

Time: 10 AM – 1 PM. Drop off & pickup are located at the Visitor Center.

Cost: $60 per child, for all 4 Wednesday sessions in the same month.  Spaces are limited!

2022:
OCTOBER SESSION: 4 Wednesdays in this session: October 5, 12, 19, & 26 ($60 per child, for all 4 dates)

Schedule of Activities: “Marine Explorers”

Wednesday, October 5
Activity: Discovering South Florida’s Mangroves
Description: Students will explore and study the different species of mangroves that make up the endangered mangrove forest habitat. The students will document each species of mangrove found in our coastal ecosystem as they compile their personal mangrove journal.

Wednesday, October 12
Activity: Plankton, Drifters of the Sea
Description: Students will learn about the organisms we call plankton how they behave and what makes then so unique. The students will collect water samples and study the many organisms that are found within.

Wednesday, October 19
Activity: Analyzing Water
Description: Students will learn about the PH and Salinity of the water and how it can affect the surrounding ecosystems. Different water samples from multiple locations will be examined to determine the difference between habitats.

Wednesday, October 26
Activity: Cruising the Coast
Description: Students will embark on a kayak adventure to explore the vital mangrove ecosystem and other coastal habitats. Here they will encounter various marine that call these areas home. Students will get wet during this activity! Please bring a change of clothes, towel, sunscreen, water shoes (NO CROCS, they come off in the water), a reusable water bottle, and lunch or snacks.

DECEMBER SESSION: 4 Wednesdays in this session: December 7, 14, 21, & 28 ($60 per child, for all 4 dates)

Schedule of Activities: “Adapt to Survive”

Wednesday, December 7
Activity: Bioluminescence, Thriving in the Dark
Description: Complete darkness, and the creatures that call it home. The class will explore these incredible organisms and the amazing adaptations the allow them to survive if these environments.

Wednesday, December 14
Activity: Fisheries and sustainable practices
Description: In this class we will lean about fisheries and how they maintain a sustainable population of fish in the ocean. The students will also dissect the anatomy of the fish and the adaptations that lets then survive in the sea.

Wednesday, December 21
Activity: Fishing, Catch and Release
Description: One of the most serious threats to our oceans is overfishing. We will study the responsible fishing practices and later apply those skills on the water. Students may bring a fishing rod if they have one, reusable water bottle, sun screen, hat, and lunch or snacks.

Wednesday, December 28
Activity: Surveying the Ocean
Description: While exploring the waters at the Deering Estate the students will learn about species surveys and how to find and identify the aquatic flora and fauna that can be found in our waters. . Students will get wet during this activity! Please bring a change of clothes, towel, sunscreen, water shoes (NO CROCS, they come off in the water), a reusable water bottle, and lunch or snacks.

2023:
FEBRUARY SESSION: 4 Wednesdays in this session: February 1, 8, 15, & 22 ($60 per child, for all 4 dates).

Schedule of Activities: “Forces of Nature”

Wednesday, February 1
Activity: Making a Storm!
Description: Hurricanes! We will explore the storms that are so common in south Florida and how they form. The students will learn about the instruments that we use to predict these forces of nature and how they affect our coastal areas.

Wednesday, February 8
Activity: Erosion and Weathering
Description: The impact of tropical storms is often devastating yet nature has found a way to withstand such forces. The class will look at the causes of erosion how it affects our coast and explore a mangrove forest which provide a natural buffer against said storms. This is a DIRTY and WET activity. Please make sure to bring: a towel, change of clothes and shoes, water shoes, a full reusable water bottle, sunscreen and bug spray, and lunch or snacks.

Activity: Harnessing the Power of Water
Description: Water carries with it enormous force. The class will explore different types of renewable energies, and engineer devices that harness the power of nature.

Wednesday, February 22
Activity: Defend the Shore!
Description: With the constant threat of hurricanes in south Florida, it falls to us to defend our coast! The students will design defenses to protect coastal areas with engaging engineering project.

APRIL SESSION: 4 Wednesdays in this session: April 5, 12, 19, & 26 ($60 per child, for all 4 dates).

Schedule of Activities: “Seas the Day”

Wednesday, April 5
Activity: Building a Boat
Description: Students will engineer and build a boat as a team and test it in our bay area. The class will lean about the different types of water crafts that are commonly used in coastal communities.

Wednesday, April 12
Activity: Cast Away!
Description: The students will learn about survival techniques that can be applied near coastal areas. The class will explore the edible and useful flora found in south Florida.

Wednesday, April 19
Activity: Corals, Underwater Exploration
Description: Corals provide food and shelter for a variety of sea creatures. The class will explore how coral reef function and snorkel some of our local sea grass beds. Students will get wet during this activity! Please bring a change of clothes, towel, sunscreen, water shoes (NO CROCS, they come off in the water), a reusable water bottle, and lunch or snacks.

Wednesday, April 26
Activity: Coastal Expedition
Description: Kayaking south Florida’s coastal areas is the best way to experience the wildlife that call these habitats home. The class will explore that waterways that go through the mangrove forests. Students will get wet during this activity! Please bring a change of clothes, towel, sunscreen, water shoes (NO CROCS, they come off in the water), a reusable water bottle, and lunch or snacks.
