Topic: “Preserving and Interpreting South Florida’s Archaeological Remains”
Presenter: Jorge Zamanillo, Museum Director, HistoryMiami
Deering Estate, Visitor Center Theatre; FREE & open to the public.

The discovery of archaeological sites in South Florida leads to not only preservation issues and legal battles to save sites but also to the recovery of thousands of artifacts that sometimes are forgotten after they are uncovered. The long term care and interpretation of the remains in the field and in collections across museums and universities is crucial to telling the whole story and engaging future generations.

Jorge Zamanillo will offer his perspective on some of the discoveries in recent history that led to the preservation of major archaeological remains in South Florida and shares how the artifacts and features are preserved, cared for, and interpreted in a museum setting. From The Cutler Fossil Site, to the Miami Circle, and the recent Met Square excavations, different methods of interpretation and what the future holds for archaeology in South Florida will be presented and discussed.

Jorge Zamanillo joined HistoryMiami in 2000 as the Curator of Object Collections. In his role as Museum Director, Jorge is in charge of museum operations, exhibitions, collections, education, and oversees building expansion efforts.
