Community Sculpture: Molding the Future with Lauren Shapiro

Miami-based artist Lauren Shapiro presents Molding the Future, a project that involves the creation of a site-specific ceramic sculpture to be displayed at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden from June 1 – August 31, 2021.

To complete the sculpture, Shapiro will engage the local community though a series of hands-on, physically-distanced clay molding activities, one of which will take place at the Deering Estate.

Participants will contribute to the development of the artwork by pressing clay into silicone molds of plant textures gathered from the South Florida landscape. The clay textures created during the activity will later be added to a larger modular sculpture, made by the artist. Participants are not required to have previous experience in ceramics.

COST: Free with RSVP. Times and tickets are very limited, register online only (WAITLIST) at Eventbrite.com.  Workshops will take place at the Deering Estate on Saturday May 1st. Masks and physical-distancing are required.
