On April 12, 2019, 120 CARE Elementary School students and teachers joined CARE principal Christopher Simmonds for an excursion from the Overtown neighborhood of Miami to the historic Deering Estate. With Earth Day just around the corner, the focus was on conservation and science for these inner city students, many of whom had never traveled as far south as Palmetto Bay. Paired with Deering Estate staff members, the CARE students and teachers got “up close and personal” with Deering wildlife, including native snakes and hermit crabs, before learning about the science behind rocket launching and then designing and building their own miniature rockets.
During their nutritious picnic lunch (provided by Frank and Liede DeValdivielso), the students learned about the importance of recycling their paper bags, aluminum foil, and plastic water bottles. After lunch, students and teachers explored the boat basin and observed the active manatees in the nearby water; as it turned out, this was quite a special treat as a number of the students had never seen a live manatee. Before boarding the buses to return home, the students relaxed and raced each other around our Grand Lawn. All in all, it was a wonderful day and a one-of-a-kind opportunity for CARE Elementary School students to get out of the classroom, learn a bit more our beautiful and precious surroundings, and marvel at some of the amazing creatures here at Deering Estate.
Thanks to sponsorship provided by IberiaBank, the Deering Estate Foundation Field Trip Scholarship program covers transportation and fees for Title IX schools, allowing students from across South Florida to discover nature, wildlife, art, and science in a picturesque outdoor setting and learn about the important work of the Deering Estate Foundation. In 2017, the program sponsored field trips for five schools and 442 students. In 2018, the program more than doubled its efforts, sponsoring field trips for eleven Title IX schools and 1,901 students. The Deering Estate Foundation looks forward to surpassing these statistics in 2019 and gifting valuable experiences to even more Miami area students in coming years.
