Sandy Smith McCarthy, who joined The Deering Estate Foundation Board in January, is a native Miamian who has contributed much to her community over the years. A mother of four, Sandy has served in leadership roles with St. Louis Catholic Church, the Science Museum, Morningstar Renewal Center, and other civic organizations. She worked closely with her husband Jim to make Tom Thumb Food Stores the successful chain it is today. She loves to travel anywhere in the world, and just this past April, Sandy added much warmth and humor to The Deering Estate Foundation’s fundraising trip to Portugal and Spain.
Sandy became a Founding Member of The Deering Estate Foundation’s 100 Ladies of Deering in 2015, inspired by the group’s mission and eager to work alongside like-minded and ambitious women.
In 2018, Sandy was honored with The Deering Estate Foundation’s “2017 Champion of the Year” Award. Mary Pettit, then Executive Director, remarked, “Every once in a while, someone very special comes along whose friendship, engagement, and leadership organically provide a huge lift that is transformative to an organization. Sandy has encouraged the 100 Ladies of Deering and the Foundation to reach higher and dig deeper, leading by example and generously supporting related advancements and projects. The Foundation has grown stronger, both in stature and in its work, through her leadership and support.”
