Theater and Literary Arts
As an extension of the Deering Estate Artist in Residence Program, the Deering Estate offers unique collaborative educational and performative events blending theater and the literary arts.
One-Minute Play Festival
#1MPF works in partnership with theatres sharing playwright or community-specific missions across the country. In each city, OMPF creates locally sourced playwright-focused community events, with the goal of promoting the spirit of radical inclusion by representing local cultures of playwrights of different age, gender, race, cultures, and points of career. The work attempts to reflect the theatrical landscape of local artistic communities by creating a dialogue between the collective conscious and the individual voice.
OMPF works with partnering organizations to identify programs or initiatives in each community to support with the proceeds from the work. The goal is to find ways give directly back to the artists in each community. Supported programs have ranged from educational programming, youth poetry projects, teaching artists working in prisons, playwright residencies and memberships, and community arts workshops.
The Playwright Development Program
As host-site and collaborative partner for the Miami Dade Department of Cultural Affair’s Playwright development program, the Deering Estate is pleased to present a series of intimately-scaled performances based on site-specific plays. These works were developed through a residency style approach with Master Playwright Kenneth Finkle and designed in partnership with the University of Miami Theater Department. Four performances are offered to the public on Wednesday April 19th , Thursday April 20th,and two performances on Saturday April 22nd, during the Deering Spring Contemporary “Platform 450”exhibition and special event.
