The Arts at Deering Estate

At the Deering Estate, we engage the public through a diverse season of contemporary and historic exhibits, concerts, on-site Artists-in-Residence, and diverse theatre lab programming for professionals and students.

The Arts at the Deering Estate are an integral part of our mission as stewards of Charles Deering’s vision. We strive to include, educate, and enrich the lives of local communities through our dedication to the arts, and we welcome local, national, and international visitors and partnerships.

The Deering Estate once housed one of the most extensive and valuable art and antique collections in South Florida. Several historic inventories document the content of the houses between 1916 and shortly after Charles Deering’s death in 1927. The vast collection included paintings by Goya, Murillo, El Greco, Zuluaga, Sorolla, Padilla, Tiepolo, Degas, Boldini, Winslow, Whistler, Gainsborough, Fortuny, Zorn, Sargent and Casas. Also included was one of the largest, most valuable collections of carpets and tapestries from Spain and the Orient in the United States at that time.

Art Exhibits in Miami

The Deering Estate offers seasons of specially-curated contemporary and historic exhibits and events that support our mission, create dialogue for our community, and represent our family of current and alumni Artists-in-Residence.

The Deering Estate seeks to continue Charles Deering’s legacy of art patronage by supporting artists who work in a multitude of disciplines and media. Artists-in-Residence receive studio space through a competitive application process where they can pursue personal artistic projects in the visual, literary, and performing arts.

The Deering Estate is an artist support organization that strives to include, educate, and enrich the lives of local communities, and welcomes local, national, and international visitors and partnerships. Learn about our current artists.

Since 2006, we have welcomed over 90 shared and collaborative residencies representing a broad scope of contemporary and traditional artistic practices.

The Deering Estate collaborates with partners from our local community and are maintaining and building relationships with international colleagues who were part of Charles Deering’s around the world. As a natural next step in our residency programs and initiatives, we have reached out to establish partnerships with international universities and institutions.

The Spring Contemporary is our yearly exhibition and celebration of Miami arts and culture. In response to an annual curatorial theme, our Artists-in-Residence and other local artists interact with the Deering Estate’s unique history through site-specific works. With over a decade of contemporary arts collaborations, this event showcases artworks in the historic homes and throughout the bayside landscape.

As an extension of the Deering Estate Artists-in-Residence program, the Deering Estate offers unique collaborative educational and performative events blending Theatre and Literary Arts. Our visitor’s center theater, which was refurbished in 2013 with the help of a Knight Foundation Challenge Grant, presented the One Minute Play Festival as its inaugural performance. Since then, our collaborations with the South Florida Theatre League have expanded into our ongoing Playwright Development Program events, continuing support of the One Minute Play Festival, and through Artists-in-Residence who are pursuing the literary arts.
